From Rusty’s journal:
I just wanted to record the miracle that happened from the time that Blake hurt his chin to the time that he got stitches.
The boys and I were at my softball game. Tara and Halle were at a practice for the Temple Cultural Celebration. Blake and Josh were at the playground and Blake fell off the ropes and split his chin open.
When he first hit his chin he was irate, running around screaming and crying. Not wanting me to look at it. Not wanting anyone to touch it. Not wanting at all to go to the doctor. Just freaking out. “Wow” I thought. I thought we had raised grittier kids. I thought our kids were pretty tough. I remember being decently tough when I got my stitches. We took a picture and sent it to Brett to take a look. We talked about all the other people who had stitches. Kali had them twice. And then, after hearing Brett’s stories, like a miracle, he did a complete 180.
When we got to the hospital he was talking about stitches and all the interesting things associated with them. And good thing too. There were a TON of kids in the waiting room. I thought we would have to go to an ER (we were at the Children’s urgent care). So many patients that all the “kids beds” where they need to sedate kids were full. But because he was so “chill” they took him back into one of the easy rooms. Then Bethany the nurse came in wearing a Star Wars shirt and Blake proceeded to charm her like crazy. Telling her about his Star Wars shirt and hoodie. Telling the nurses all sorts of things. Talking to them like it was just any other day and things were perfectly happy. He charmed the Dr. Sarah. We read a book while we waited. He got to watch Pokemon while they did the stitches. He was perfect. He didn’t cry a bit. He was perfectly brave. He did a complete 180. He got a penguin stuffy. He was in heaven. As we were leaving he said “I want to get stitches again!”
Josh said the accident was all his fault. He didn’t let Blake come on the tire swing with him when he asked. If Josh had let Blake on the tire swing with him he wouldn’t have been climbing on the ropes and fallen. By that logic if I would have ran home he might not have gotten stitches. There was 1 out. They hit it pretty shallow, I was on third base. They were up by 15. We needed one run to keep from getting 15 run ruled. The guy caught it in short shallow field. I held up. I could have made it home. If I had made it home we would have played another inning and Blake wouldn’t have hit his chin because he would have been watching the game and not at the park. You just can’t blame random events on preceding events. By that logic we are causing and not causing bad events all the time.
